From the beaches of Port Dixon to the golf course in Selangor and the hill tops of Genting Highlands, sports is given high priority in the scheme of things. Whether it's on water, indoor, outdoors or on hill tops, KL has sports venues that cater to almost any preferences.

Golf has grown in a big way giving KL a place among the top golfing destinations of the world. Excellent courses are to be found at the prestigious Royal Selangor Club, Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort, Unggul Country Club, and the Saujana Golf and Country Club.

The National Tennis Complex in Jalan Duta has excellent courts and infrastructure to truly enjoy a good game. Bowling is another popular sport and there are various bowling alleys in the city.

The Sports Toto Bowling at Plaza Berjaya in Jalan Imbi, and the Federal Bowl in Jalan Bukit Bintang are the two most popular. Squash can almost qualify as a national pastime; such is its popularity. The National Squash Centre in KL is touted to be the biggest in the world with 10 courts, occupying about 7000 square metres. The Chin Woo Stadium is a firm favourite for badminton and basketball games. They have superb facilities here and the courts are in excellent condition despite being a bit older than the more modern Stadium Merdeka and the Negara in the vicinity.

For horse-racing aficionados, there's the Selangor Turf Club on Jalan Sungai Besi where they have races on weekends. For adventure sport such as bungee jumping or sky diving, head to the Genting Highland Theme Park Resort. For an adrenalin shot without leaving the city, head to the KL Tower or Menara KL. BASE (Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth) jumpers use this telecommunications tower-the fourth largest in the world - to showcase their brand of daredevilry before a terrified audience. A three second free fall is necessary to clear the tower head adding to the already heightened sense of terror in the spectators. More light aircraft and helicopter stunts are also performed to add to the scare factor. This is an annual event that takes place around August.

To witness the Formula 1 fever, head to the Sepang Formula1Circuit. This is a major annual event with top names involved. The crowds are huge and temperatures high; so bring plenty of water and snacks. More car racing is available at the Asian Festival of Speed held by Motorsport Asia.

For a strenuous yet exhilarating jaunt, climb the Melawati hills also known as Bukit Tabur. This is a scenic spot with a spectacular hill towering over a dam to give nature lovers a high. Start early in the day to gain some vertical miles before the sun gets really hot. The various National Parks and Recreation Centres have facilities for hiking, mountain biking, trekking and other outdoor activities. The Taman Negara National Park is a favourite. Permits to enter certain areas and the services of an expert guide from the Wildlife Department are mandatory.

The Royal Selangor Yacht Club in Port Klang is where you need to head if sailing sets you aflutter. A wealth of other water sport opportunities abound in the lovely beaches that dot the map of Malaysia . Snorkelling, scuba diving, cruising, fishing, and more are on offer on these exotic locales. The island of Langkawi tops the list, with Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Redang, Pulau Tioman and Pulau Besar right behind in terms of world class water sport and divine sea food. As you've probably guessed by now Pulau stands for beach, and they each have something distinct to offer. Redang has a spectacular coral reef and two World War II ship wrecks to be explored. Tioman is a wild life sanctuary where amazing birds, animals, and reptiles roam free. If you are new to diving and would love the chance to get a few pointers, head to Planet Scuba in Bangsar in KL city. They have a scuba academy for beginners and all facilities for pros to perfect their art.

Fitness centres abound in the city with state-of-the-art equipment and trained professionals at hand to hold your hand. Fitness First, Celebrity Fitness, and True Fitness are in the forefront in the business and have centres in strategic locations all over KL. Fitness First has over 10 outlets, while Celebrity Fitness has 3 in the city and 1 in Penang . Most hotels have their own in house fitness establishments, swimming pools, Jacuzzis and saunas to take care of visitor's healt.
